Insurance companies eliminated payment for physician first assistants in cataract surgery. Community hospitals are responding to this situation by utilizing perioperative nurses and certified surgical technicians. The credentialing process is largely relegated to each hospital. The ophthalmic nurse is now quite pivotal in writing the policies and procedures. Also inherent in this expanded role is the development of preceptor training, job description and performance appraisals. This serves as a primer to specifically address these problems in a community hospital operating room.
