Mucoid enteritis in rabbits

An outbreak of mucoid enteritis occurred in a group of 46 laboratory rabbits. The first sign was loss of weight; 11 animals either died or were killed when moribund, the survivors regained their body-weight; histological examination of the mid-ileum showed a complete loss of villi and the mucosa was sealed with a layer of cuboidal and squamous epithelium; the intestinal mucosa is unlikely to recover at this stage. The signs suggest that the condition is related to a breakdown of the intestinal milieu due to endogenous factors.
