Prolactin implantation into the median eminence of normal or ovariectomized rats caused an increase in hypothalamic prolactin inhibiting factor, mammary regression and, in intact rats only, a decrease in pituitary prolactin concn. and depression of luteal function. In lactating rats, prolactin implants counteracted the stimulatory effects of suckling on prolactin release by the pituitary and therefore significantly impared lactation and caused regression of the corpora lutea of lactation.
