Documentation is presented in three major areas related to smoking and physical development: the indirect effect on the fetus of parental smoking, the passive effect on the infant and child of smoking by the parents or others in the immediate environment, and the direct effect on the respiratory tract of the adolescent brought about by active smoking. Cigarette smoking remains the largest single unnecessary and preventable cause of illness and early death. Tables show related statistics.
