Drug-resistant Plasmodium vivax malaria

Drug-resistant Plasmodium vivax malaria is reported from New Zealand in a 56-year-old man who had contracted malaria one year previously in the Solomon Islands. During his four bouts of malaria he had received treatment with chloroquine on one occasion only, and chloroquine followed by primaquine (15 mg/day for 14 days) on two occasions. During the fourth attack of malaria it was shown that chloroquine resistance had developed. The emerging problem of chloroquine resistance in P. vivax malaria is discussed.
