Between July 1992 and September 1993, 8 patients with adenomcarcinoma of the rectum were treated by laparoscopic-assisted abdomino-perineal excision of the rectum. Using an awl, it was possible to ventrally retract the sigmacolon and fix it to the ventral abdominal wall, simplifying the dissection of the inferior mesenteric artery.
