The National Population Policy of India caused a great increase in the performance of sterilization. A total of 8.4 million sterilizations for the 1976 fiscal year was projected. Vasectomies were performed twice as often as tubectomies. From April to September 1976, 550% more sterilizations were performed than in 1975. Cash compensations are made for postoperative complications or deaths due to sterilization operations.
