The use of check chains for the control of dogs is discussed especially with regard to the welfare of the dog. These chains have apparently caused severely sprained necks, fainting, transient foreleg paresis, hindlimb ataxia, misalignment of cervical vertebrae, intraocular pressure disturbances, damaged cervical sympathetic nerves resulting in Horner's syndrome, swollen eyes, tracheal and oesophageal damage and recurrent laryngeal nerve paralysis.
