Cannulation of renal veins of sheep for long-term functional and metabolic studies

Two methods for long-term renal vein cannulation and one method for long-term ureteral cannulation were examined in the sheep. The four sheep with ureteral cannulation developed pyelonephritis and hydronephrosis. Polyvinyl cannulas used for direct renal vein cannulation remained functional in all seven sheep for 8-28 days. When cannulas with silicone rubber tips were used, the functional use was extended to 28-45 days in the five sheep in this experiment. Retroperitoneal surgical approach to the renal vein rather than peritoneal approach resulted in faster recovery. Renal vein cannulas did not cause any detectable pathological or functional changes in the kidney.
