The effect of a single monthly injection of 100-150 mg medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA) and of subdermal testosterone propionate (TP) implants or single monthly injections of 100 or 250 mg testosterone enanthate (TE) on spermatogenesis was studied in 29 male urological patients. All but 1 of the subjects showed a reduction in sperm production. Based on sperm counts or testicular biopsy, sperm production was severely reduced in most cases. Treatment had no apparent effect on the size, consistency, or sensitivty of the breasts, testicles, or prostate. Libido returned to normal within several weeks in the few patients who reported an initial decrease. Treatment caused no apparent metabolic changes, and only a few patients reported an increase in body weight.
