From July through Sept., in the Northern USA, S. sciureus experience a period of anovulation and low sexual activity. The results of studies during this anovulatory period and the effects of exogenous gonadotropins on vaginal cytology, ovulation, sexual behavior and pregnancy are summarized. By increasing the level of FSH [follicle-stimulating hormone] ovulation occurred and pregnancies resulted. The theory of a decreased responsiveness of the squirrel monkey to FSH during this summer season is supported.
