Japanese encephalitis (JE) is transmitted by Culex tritaeniorhynchus, C. vishnui and C. pseudovishnui in Tamil Nadu, India. During the control programme of 1988-90, malathion (25% wdp) was either (i) not sprayed in a village; (ii) sprayed before the onset of the transmission season; or (iii) sprayed after the 1st recorded incidence of JE in that particular year. Anticipatory spraying led to very few cases of JE compared with the numbers from the unsprayed villages, and spraying after the 1st incidence of JE resulted in no further cases.
