Partial ileocaecocolic obstruction due to suspected enterolithiasis in a dog

A 12-year-old female Cocker Spaniel with a 36-h history of acute vomiting and diarrhoea was pyrexic with a tense abdomen but no specific abnormality. Symptomatic treatment and fluid therapy controlled the vomiting but melaena persisted. Radiography revealed a radiodense mass in the mid abdomen; positive contrast radiography revealed partial obstruction at the ileocaecal junction. A laparotomy was performed and a 2 cm diameter foreign body composed primarily of granular calcified material and hairs was removed from the terminal ileum. The dog made an uneventful recovery. It is suggested that the mass may have been a true enterolith.
