Partial hypopituitarism following total body irradiation in adult patients with haematological malignancy

We present the endocrine parameters of two adult patients with partial hypopituitarism documented at 6 and 8 months after chemotherapy, single fraction total body irradiation (10.5 Gy) and autologous bone marrow transplantation. The hormone profiles demonstrate severe somatotroph insufficiency and impaired adrenocorticotroph secretary capacity, despite sparing of the gonadotroph compartment. We recommend stimulatory testing of hypothalamic-pituitary function from 3 months post-transplant, as basal hormonal concentrations may be equivocal, and supplementation may significantly improve quality of life.
