Iatrogenic renal obstruction in a dog

A case of severe bilateral ureteral damage in a 16-month-old Golden Retriever bitch following surgery is reported. Clinical examination of the bitch several days after routine ovariohysterectomy revealed a painful mass in the area of the vaginal stump. Celiotomy revealed that the urinary bladder, stump of the vagina and rectum were adhered together with a poorly defined mass, suspected to be a focus of infection, within the adhesions. The mass was removed. The dog which was lethargic and had not been seen to urinate since this surgery was presented 4 days later. Radiography revealed ascites and and enlarged left kidney and an excretory urogram showed opacification of both kidneys. A celiotomy and pubic symphysis osteotomy revealed gross dilation and obstruction of the left ureter and damage to the right ureter. The surgery performed to restore urine output and prevent urine leakage into the abdomen is described. Although the left kidney had been totally obstructed for at least 4 days renal function returned to normal one week after surgery.
