A male nilgai, about 4-years-old, was anorexic for 4 days and had diarrhoea for 2 days before being found dead. The main PM findings were hyperaemia and oedema of the entire mucosa of the abomasum, duodenum, jejunum, ileum and colon and the presence of many cyst-like nodules, from 5 to 15 mm in diameter, in the serosa of the jejunum. The nodules which communicated with the intestine through small openings had thick walls and well defined lumina. Histological examination showed that the diverticular portions of the intestine had the same histological structure as the intestine. The mucosal layer which had herniated through the muscularis mucosa into the muscular coat was continuous with the intestinal lumen. Intestinal diverticulitis was diagnosed. This appears to be the first report of the condition in nilgai.
