A primary goal of the American Academy of Pediatrics, USA, was to encourage breast feeding when it was possible and the use of appropriate substitutes when it was not. Before parturition the woman should be able to make the informed decision whether to breast feed or not. Health care staff should be able to advise on breast feeding. The lactating woman should be supported by the physician and by the hospital and work-place practices, whichever method of feeding was chosen. Any routine practice that tended to discourage breast feeding should be opposed.
