The author describes the uses of population statistics in West Germany and the value of statistical data as the foundation of rational policy. Political, social, and administrative applications of census data on population, employment, and housing are discussed for federal, state, and local levels. Consideration is given to labor force participation, schooling and job training, commuting, and housing. The authors discuss the limitations of sample studies and population registers as alternatives to population census.
