Cardiac catheterization and conventional coronary angioplasty

Most of the methods of diagnostic angiography currently in use are well established, although newer methods such as intravascular ultrasound and Doppler measurement of coronary blood flow velocity have been introduced. This review concentrates on several recent developments in diagnostic catheterization, including the appropriate application of diagnostic catheterization and complications. Balloon coronary angioplasty, also a relatively mature technology, has reached the stage where its appropriate use, case selection, and outcomes are being scrutinized, as was reflected in the reports published last year. Its appropriate role in relation to coronary artery bypass surgery, and the continuing effort to solve the problem of restenosis are also reviewed.
