The heterogeneity of cutaneous leishmaniasis, with emphasis on the Old world, is reviewed under the following headings: the multiplicity of Leishmania species; types of tegumentary leishmaniasis in the Old World (simple cutaneous leishmaniasis; anergic cutaneous leishmaniasis; hyperallergic cutaneous leishmaniasis); diagnosis; prevention of tegumentary leishmaniasis (reduction of animal reservoirs; reduction of the human parasite pool; vaccination); treatment and prognosis (physical methods; non-specific therapy; specific antileishmanial chemotherapy; immune manipulation).
