Now that the coccidian nature of an emerging protozoal intestinal pathogen has been confirmed, it is reported that in 1988 and 1991, respectively, oocysts morphologically indistinguishable from those of Cyclospora cayetanensis were identified in the faeces of 2 children with diarrhoea in Johannesburg, South Africa. The oocysts measured approximately 8 micro m in diameter, and were like those from a 3rd child in Durban. None of these children was immunocompromised. It is now suggested that C. cayetanensis is of world-wide distribution.
