Urbanization in Africa is often viewed as a symbol of positive change and progress or as an inevitable process because of the pressure on farm land. Although these pressures are relative in the sense that they are caused by traditional farming methods which mitigate against increased productivity, they nevertheless give further impetus to the urban-orientation of official economic policies to the detriment of policies that would provide greater agricultural productivity and rural as against urban development. The gap between town and country is thus growing larger in Africa each year.
