Cutaneous myiasis in the shoulder after a stay in South America

The case of a 21-year-old woman who presented at hospital in Madrid, Spain, with a lesion on her right shoulder of size 2 mm is presented. She had previously spent 3 weeks on the Uruguayan-Brazilian border and had been repeatedly bitten by mosquitoes. At presentation, the lesion was 6 weeks old; during the 6th week it had grown in size and become painful; she had felt movements within the lesion, usually during the day. On the day of presentation, the lesion had exuded a serous fluid, and an insect larva of length 2.5 mm had emerged spontaneously. The lesion was then explored surgically and treated with antibiotics. The larva was identified as Dermatobia hominis.
