Over 10,000 cases of traumatic ulcers were diagnosed in cattle at the Baia-Mare veterinary clinic in the period 1954-1968. There were two peak periods: during August and September and when housed in winter. These are the times when hard, mechanically irritative foods predominate. Cases were rarely seen in male animals; the average percentage of cows affected was 5.6% and of cows over five years old 6.8%. Affected animals also had low blood values for carotene and calcium. Treatment is discussed.
