UNCRD Regional Development Series 6: 395

1981

Document Number: 420410
This volume contains papers presented at the seminar on urbanization and national development, organized by UNCRD in October 1980. The role of urbanization in regional development is examined by diagnosing the forces that promote urbanization and metropolitan concentration. The first part provides a transnational overview of urbanization trends and metropolitan issues and problems. The second contains country case studies of urban systems and national development (for India, Korea, Malaysia, Philippines and Thailand). The final part presents six case studies of Bangkok, Delhi, Kuala Lumpur, Manila, Seoul and Sydney. The need for urban planning in the context of overall development and in accordance with the specific historical framework of the country concerned is emphasized.
