Parents' attitude towards early marriage of girls

Data are presented from a survey of four villages in Palanpur taluka, Gujarat, India, on the attitudes of parents to the early marriage of their daughters. Ten fathers and ten mothers from each village were asked their opinions on 18 attitude statements towards early marriage. The socioeconomic characteristics of the parents (all from one caste) were also recorded. Parents were generally in favour of early marriage, despite its damaging physical and mental dangers. There was a significant difference in the attitudes of fathers and mothers.
