The authors discuss the confusion between hypoallergenic diets (containing a single source of protein and carbohydrate to which animal has not been exposed before) and controlled diets (containing a limited number of highly digestible ingredients allowing for optimal assimilation and reduced exposure to potentially irritating and antigenic substances). The use of these diets in animal with allergies is discussed and the importance of providing a proper balance of nutrients in home-cooked diets is stressed.
