The author propose a classification of diabetic retinopathy, based of ophthalmoscopic modifications of the retinal vessels and tissues. In this formulation ewrw considered the most recent data in the literature, the clinical possibilities in exploring the posterior pole, the imperatives of clinical practice and the necessities connected with the screening action. The classification involves four stages and it may be used either in a simple or detailed form.
