Capsaicin, a physiologically active substance from Fructus capsici, possesses a broad spectrum of activity. Until recent times, the compound was not sufficiently studied regardless of the fact that it was widely used in household and medical practice. It was shown recently that capsaicin interacts with C-fibers of sensitive nerve conductors, facilitates the elimination of substance P from the latter by decreasing pain sensitivity, and affects also the respiratory and cardiovascular systems and smooth muscles.
