Clinical signs are variable, but many include weight loss, rough coat, weakness (particularly of hind limbs), anaemia, abdominal pain and increased rectal temp. The lesions in the aorta and/or cranial mesenteric artery are caused by fourth-stage larvae of Strongylus vulgaris migrating into the tunica intima. The stroma becomes weakened, and sacculation takes place; fibrous proliferation in the tunica media reduces elasticity.
