The obstetric behaviour of the primipara

In a Bombay hospital from August 1969 to August 1970 there were 765 primiparae and 6593 multiparae. The 183 primiparae aged 19 years or less were classed as young and the 60 aged 30 years or more as old. Diabetics were 5% of the old and 0.5% of all primiparae, more in the other age groups and 0.1% of multiparae. Mean birthweight of the infant was for primiparae of increasing age 2.34, 2.61, 3.17 kg and for multiparae 2.38 kg. Infants of 1.9 kg birthweight or less were 18.5, 14.5, 29.5% of those born to 3 groups of primiparae and infants over 3 kg were 12.5, 22.7, 22.9%, although the common belief is that young primiparae have the highest proportion of infants rated as premature because of low birthweight.
