A probable case of Lyme Disease contracted in Mozambique

The case of a 40-year-old man from Brazzaville, Congo, who was bitten by a tick under his right collar bone while visiting Mozambique in June 1992 is described. During the days immediately following the bite he was slightly feverish and developed an erythema of the thoracic area which disappeared after several weeks. At the beginning of October he presented at hospital in Paris, France, complaining of a history of diffuse arthralgia since July. He no longer had a fever, there were no signs of swelling at his joints and cardiac findings were normal. Indirect immunofluorescence, however, was positive for Borrelia burgdorferi. He was prescribed amoxycillin at 6 g/day for 15 days. 3 months later the asthenia, arthralgia and fever had disappeared, although he remained serologically positive for B. burgdorferi.
