Outpatient management of dengue infection in the University Hospital, Kuala Lumpur

To assist physicians, the Primary Care Unit of the University Hospital, Kuala lumpur, uses a set of guidelines for the outpatient management of patients with suspected dengue infection. These guidelines and their assessment are discussed. The guidelines cover early and accurate diagnosis; the diagnosis and detection of complications; assessment of individual patients with regard to hospitalization; and, outpatient investigations and treatment. The practicality of this protocol was assessed by a 2-month study (May to June 1991) in which the patients' final outcome; rate of admission; doctors' compliance to the protocol; and, patients' default rate, were evaluated. The low admission rate and high compliance by both doctors and patients showed that this protocol was practical in the University Hospital.
