In an investigation of splenomegaly in Brazilian Indians from the Alto Xingu region, serological tests using immunofluorescence and haemagglutination showed 30 of 77 subjects to be very weakly positive for schistosomiasis. No Schistosoma mansoni eggs were found in a large number of stools examined, and no snail vectors were found in the area. It is thought that the positive cases may have been sensitized by other cercariae. Malaria was thought to be the cause of the splenomegaly.
