A feature on the development of Mauritius includes an interview with the Prime Minister A. Jugnauth (pp.13-17) which covers general policy for development based on Mauritian culture but emphasizes the key role of the sugar industry in the economy, the need to diversify agriculture and the importance of the tourist industry. A second article by R. de Backer (pp.18-25) goes into more detail on the proposals for economic development including plans for rationalizing the sugar industry, giving priority to increasing food production, plans for regional cooperation and for the tourist industry. The feature continues with an interview with the Finance Minister P. Berenger (pp.26-29) and a short article on EC-Mauritius cooperation by G. Hild (pp.30-32).
