Diabetes mortality among Chinese migrants to New York City

Proportional mortality rates from diabetes were tabulated from death certificates (1968-1972) for Chinese in New York City (NYC) and compared to white and nonwhite mortality data for 1970. NYC Chinese have a greater proportion of deaths due to diabetes than NYC whites or nonwhites. Within the NYC Chinese population, foreign-born Chinese have a slightly greater proportion of deaths due to diabetes than USA-born Chinese. Age-specific proportional mortality rates due to diabetes among foreign-born Chinese increase with increasing length of residence in NYC.
