Three male llamas, born and reared at 140 m above sea level, aged 5, 7 and 14 months and weighing 22.7, 31.8 and 59 kg, were studied at 260 m, and after 5 and 10 weeks at 3, 420 m. Using heart catheterization, measurements were made at rest, during acute hypoxia, and during treadmill exercise. At high altitude 100% O2 was also given. The average sea-level resting mean pulmonary artery pressure (Ppa) was 14 mm Hg and increased in all three animals.
