The discussion is limited mainly to trends in passenger transport. One third of automobile travel in Canada is for weekend, vacation, and daily recreation. The automobile will remain the dominant mode of passenger travel to and beyond the year 2000 although various improvements will be made to make it more efficient. The future personal and public costs of passenger transport are examined. It is concluded that daily recreational travel will decline; shorter work weeks, 'flex-time', and longer vacations will mean longer trip distances and more visits to outdoor recreation sites; less driving for pleasure; outings for elderly and handicapped will become less frequent; and mobile and portable recreation services will be curtailed.
