Evaluation of psychological and social functioning of patients after neurosurgical treatment for pharmacologically intractable epilepsy. Descriptive study. University Hospital Utrecht in collaboration with the Institute for Epilepsy in Heemstede, the Netherlands. After two years' follow-up, social functioning, vocational adjustment and emotional stability were assessed in a group of 13 adult patients treated surgically between 1985 and 1992 for intractable seizures. The majority of the patients improved or at least maintained their social and employment status. Emotional functioning showed minor changes for anxiety and emotional stability. The outlook for improvement in psychosocial functioning for epileptic patients treated neurosurgically is promising. Minor changes were found in emotional stability.
