This chapter provides a historical background of tuberculosis (TB), and discusses the treatment strategies for TB (cod-liver oil therapy, BCG vaccination and drug therapy), the decline of TB in industrialized countries, the geographical distribution of and risk factors for TB, the incidence and prevalence of TB among human immunodeficiency virus-infected patients, children, elderly and other risk groups, the emergence of drug-resistant TB, the role of nutritional state (protein and energy status, and vitamin A, D, B complex, C and other nutrient deficiencies) in the development of TB, and the clinical aspects/physiopathology and diagnosis of TB.
