Data from the National Surveys of Family Growth for 1973 and 1976 were used to study contraceptive use during lactation. Approx. 20% of women used no contraceptive in months 2-6 post partum. Barrier methods of contraception were most commonly used, but approx. 14% of women used oral contraceptives early in lactation. There were age and racial differences in contraceptive use, and between 1973 and 1976 there were decreases in the proportion of lactating women using no contraception and in the proportion using the pill.
