Absence of antibodies to avian pneumovirus in Canadian poultry

Since 1980, slaughter condemnations due to air sacculitis have increased and swollen head syndrome or turkey rhinotracheitis, or undefined aetiology, has been reported. An ELISA developed for the detection of antibodies to avian pneumovirus, which may be a contributing factor to these diseases, was used to test 10 000 chicken or turkey serum samples from January 1990 to March 1992 from across Canada; no serological evidence of avian pneumovirus infection was revealed. Further serological monitoring is continuing.
