Is survival enough? Challenges of the integration of health and well-being in the third world

This paper discusses the paths taken by developing countries to improve the health and well-being of their populations in a context of diminishing resources. Emphasis is placed on Latin American countries, where the study attempts to clarify the changing nature of the relationship between health and social well-being in the 1970s and 1980s. The second part of the paper looks at three viable and different political scenarios to confront this problem. They are: survival without well-being; survival and eradication of extreme poverty and; survival, eradication of extreme poverty and selective reconversion of the poor.
