By attaching a price tag to certain health risks--be it smoking, high blood pressure or excessive use of alcohol--such companies as Baker Hughes Inc., U-Haul International and Hershey Foods Corp. hope employees will take the initiative to reduce the health risks that lead to expensive medical care. But in trying to control soaring health care costs, do employers have the right to encourage employees to change unhealthy lifestyles by offering financial incentives? Furthermore, does this approach really work?
