This review examines scientific validity of the theory that increased intake of antioxidants such as vitamins E and C, beta -carotene, ubiquinones and Se can reduce incidence of ischaemic vascular disorders. Research into atherogenesis has shown the importance of oxidation of low-density lipoproteins and lipids in, e.g., endothelial cell membrane by free radicals. Animal experiments and epidemiological and double-blind human studies appear to confirm the theory. Prospective controlled epidemiological studies are required and clinically effective doses and toxic levels of antioxidants would have to be established if their prophylactic use is approved.
