A study is made of how the concept of the community health worker is being realized in practice in various developing countries, identifying the major problems and indicating how the contribution of the community health worker to the provision of primary health care can be made more effective in the future. It is based on a review of published literature, as well as on unpublished reports of meetings and other generally inaccessible material. Aspects examined include the tasks and functions of the community health worker, selection of candidates for training, remuneration, and health system and community support for the health worker.
