Vaginitis caused by known pathogens, such as Candida-albicans, Trichomonas-vaginalis, Herpes-genitalis, Staphylococcus-aureus, group A streptococci, lactobacilli, Chlamydia and Gardnerella-vaginalis, have a greater tendency to recurrence than to persistent infection. Only in Trichomonas and Chlamydia infections was it possible to achieve a significant drop in the recurrence rate by treating the sexual partner. Two primary causes of persistent vaginitis are dermatological diseases and viral infections. Symptomatic, antiinflammatory local treatment temporarily relieves the problem. Control of physiological vaginal flora and stress management have brought about a significant improvement of chronic, refractory vaginal infections.
