In this detailed case report on a 27-yr-old man with liver cirrhosis and a portacaval shunt, no particular therapeutic effect of dietary treatment with a Lactobacillus acidophilus milk preparation could be demonstrated, either with regard to the patient's clinical condition or his N balance.
