Satisfaction and utilisation of primary health care service facilities in Karnataka

A study to find out the utilization pattern of primary health care service network and the reasons associated with various actions were taken up in Rural Karnataka State. The study was observed 1.1 per cent point prevalence rate of handicapped persons, 6.8 per cent point prevalence of sickness and 11.4 per cent 30 days period prevalence of sickness. In a period of one year 1.2 per cent of the persons had hospitalization for sickness. Normally 56.2 per cent of the HHs take treatment mostly from the Government institutions and 41.3 per cent from the private medical practitioners. Considerable proportion of them have to travel 6 kms or more to get the treatment. The level of satisfaction for treatment at the Government sources was 44 per cent. The referral system also needs improvement. House to house services were availed by 23 per cent of the HHs in three months period and only 5 per cent of the population received some services. The people were not satisfied with the regularity of the services provided by the health workers.
