Tube feeding of patients with cancer of the larynx in the early postoperative period

Anthropometric and biochemical indices were studied in 64 men, mean age 52.4 +or- 8.9 years, in 3 groups given Unipit, a mixture of basic nutrients in an easily-assimilated form, the preparation Nutricomp or a hospital tube feed based on natural products by nasogastric tube during the first 15 days after surgery for laryngeal cancer. Protein in the diet was 89, 86.9 and 64 g and energy 2200, 2500 and 2423 kcal, daily, respectively. In patients given the traditional hospital feed, body weight and body mass index (BMI) and albumin and prealbumin in blood decreased. Transferrin values remained below normal at the end of treatment In patients given the special enteral preparations, anthropometric, biochemical and immunological indices tended to improve. Increase in body weight and BMI was greater with Unipit than Nutricomp. Nitrogen balance was similar with both products.
